Northants Seniors Mens Team aged sixty five and over make history

The first Midland Seniors County match for players aged sixty five and over.

Played at Drayton Park on a good golfing day’s weather, HISTORY was made when Staffordshire and Northamptonshire fielded teams predominately over sixty five years of age.

A close morning Greensomes with great hopes for the afternoon, we encountered excellent opposition finally falling short 12 points to 6.

Golf was the winner on this day. The match was played in a tremendous spirit. The day was capped off with a very nice meal and some very funny stories from the oldest player. Terry Henwood of Staffordshire aged 78 years young, playing off 9 handicap.

The thought of over sixty five golf when suggested to the MGU Executive was met with resistance; Mark Ashton the Staffordshire organiser suggested that the two Counties use a friendly fixture to trial the format.

This match will be reported back to the MGU Seniors delegates and then the MGU Executive.

Quite what the future will be I am not sure, but Northamptonshire seniors can be proud to be the first.
