NGL Ladies Vets 2nd Team match v Bedfordshire

The second team lady vets with handicaps 16 to 26 played their final match at John O'Gaunt G.C. on Wednesday 16th August against  a Bedfordshire team whose handicaps ranged from 10 to 31. The Bedfordshire team contained several home players and this was reflected in the results.

The weather was fine and the Carthagena course was in good condition. Our first pairing of Carol Collins (Kingsthorpe) and Pat Ward (Silverstone ) had trouble getting to read the greens and found themselves 6 down after 6 holes but this did not deter them and they fought back to win the next 4 holes however, ended up losing 2 and 1.

Sandy Burgess (Overstone Park) and Nita Pryer (Kingsthorpe) were drawn against a player off 13 who knew the course well and although the Northampton pair put up a good fight they too lost 4 and 2, the 16th hole proving very difficult. 

Doreen Morrison (Staverton) and Karen Fitzpatrick (Nene Park) came round to the 9th hole all square,  and although they too were drawn against a player with a handicap of 12 continued to play some steady golf and won their match 3 and 2.

Jane Ross and Barbara Stone both from Elton Furze were up against the lowest handicap player and  although Barbara hit the pin on the par 3 8th hole and just missed the birdie putt they battled well and only lost their match 2 and 1.

Liz Waine (Wellingborough) and Julie Edwards (Silverstone) played a pairing of a 13 and 31 handicaps they played some good golf but struggled having to give a shot on the par 3 13th hole they lost 6 and 5.

Vanessa Morris and Joyce Fisher both from Nene Park G.C. were more evenly matched against the Bedfordshire pair and the match swung backwards and forwards between the two couples. On the 18th hole there was great concentration as each player tried to hole their putt on a two tier green, in the end the match was halved.

Judy Burdett and Sue Dawkins both from Pytchley Lodge had never played the course before but enjoyed the day against an on form pairing and lost their match 5 and 4. The final pair of Pat Wilson (Wellingborough) playing off 26 and Gina Boreham (Northampton)  playing off 23 came up against two home players both playing off 18 and found it difficult to match home advantage but took the match to the 16th hole and lost 4 and 3.

Everyone enjoyed the day and felt the matches were played in a friendly manner with the lovely meal ending a season of ups and downs.
