Seniors MGU  v Shropshire & Herefordshire

Five days on from the flaming June weather we had for the Nottinghamshire match it was much the same for the match at Wrekin, cold, windy and cloudy. The only difference being we were playing on a hill as opposed to the flatness of Overstone. Our top pairing of Richard Jackson and myself got us off to a good start putting an early point on the board with a 3&1 victory. S&H then fought back with the next two points against our pairings of Mick Barnett and Rob Clark going down 2&1 and Alan Lindsay and Dean McIntyre going down 3&1. Simon Orrey and Rob Price then levelled the score with a valuable 2&1 win. The Wrekin hillfort then became a stronghold for S&H and they secured the final two points with victories over our pairings of Graham Castle and Jamie Scholey and Gary Smith and Mike Abbotts 1 down and 2 down respectfully. This meant a 4-2 lead after the morning greensomes in favour of S&H.

The afternoon fourballs again got off to a great start with victories in the first and third pairings and a half in the second match. This meant we leapt into a 7-5 lead with three matches remaining. Simon and Rob in match four narrowly lost on the 18th to bring the score back to level pegging. The fifth match was to finish all square leaving the final pairing of Gary Smith and Mike Abbotts being the decider. I was expectant of a win as Mike (Postman Abbotts) had promised to deliver me two points. Sadly, this was not the case as I forgot to stick a first-class stamp on his forehead before he went out and S&H won the final match with a 3&1 victory.

The match was played in great spirit and still competitively fought over as the overall result of 10-8 in favour of S&H shows. 

I would like to thank all those who played in the match and fought hard on the Wrekin Hill.
