The County U18 Boys took part in this prestigious Tournament, held this year at Overstone Park Golf Club. We were fortunate to have 2 Members from that Club in our Team.
The Boys had played a practice round the day before along with the 9 other Counties from the whole of the South Midlands.
The winner of this Competition then goes forward to represent the Midlands in the National Final, to be held at Teignmouth GC in Dorset, later in the season.
After the morning round, with 5 out of the 6 Players' scores to count, we were in first place with a combined score of 7 over par as the aggregate of the best 5 players. Ollie Penberthy shot 2 under par and Jadon Pham shot 1 under par. Jack Peters was 2 over par with Oli Godwin and Kai Raymond both scoring 4 over par in the cold and windy conditions. In second place were Cambridgeshire at 11 over par. Our non scorer was Ben Atherton. This exceeded our expectation and we hoped that the Boys could repeat the performance in the afternoon round.
The afternoon round saw Ben turn his form around , aided by James who caddied for him, and he shot a 2 over par round. Also on 2 over par we had Jadon and Oli who both held their rounds together very well. Next was Jack at 3 over par followed by Kai. Kai was standing at 1 under par with 5 holes to play when he was hit with a migrane and feeling unwell. To his credit he finished his round but dropped several shots late on to record 7 over par. Non scorer in the afternoon was Ollie, who couldn't repeat his fabulous morning round which earned him the prize for the a.m. best net round.
Things were looking good at this stage and we were in the lead, ahead of Worcestershire on countback. However, Cambridgeshire had 2 players still on the Course and they came in with rounds of 1 and 2 under par. This allowed them to drop an 85 and take the lead at this late stage. So Cambridgeshire won this Competition for the first time in their history and go forward to represent the Midlands,
A superb performance from our Team and they should all be very proud of themselves to finish in second place ahead of the eight other Counties.
