East Anglian MGU Seniors Match v Suffolk

Our first league game of the 2025 season was away versus Suffolk at Bury St Edmunds GC. The warm weather spell continued with a fresh wind that was a factor whilst playing. Like most courses I have played this year the course played hard and fast. It was presented in good condition but the members commented that it was a couple of weeks behind where they wanted it to be.

We always seem to have problems with the foursomes and it was the same again where we had a 4.5 to 0.5 deficit going into the afternoon singles.

There was a quick turn around for the and we were able to achieve an improved  5 – 5 result but obviously not enough with a final score of 9.5 to 5.5 in favour of Suffolk.

Notable matches, Alan Freeman obtained a half after being 2 down with 3 to play. Andy Castell birdied the 18th hole from the greenside bunker to beat their captain 1 up. Andy Limbert represented the team for the first time, unfortunately he did not get the points he wanted but he will have more opportunities.

Bury St Edmunds course is a good layout and has extensive practice facilities including a separate 9 hole course. We were hosted well in their upgraded clubhouse with a great meal following the match.

Our next match is on the 28th May v our local rivals Leicestershire at Kirby Muxloe. This is the first match in the East Midlands league.
