Promoted and supported by the Golf Foundation, GolfSixes was created in 2017 to give young golfers the opportunity to play on the golf course in a format that is fun, team based and suitable for beginners.
GolfSixes involves teams of 6 boys and girls, playing six holes in pairs in Texas Scramble format, with chipping, putting and long drive challenges also part of the event. This year the Northamptonshire League was one of over 100 leagues, across 500 golf clubs with 6,000 players taking part in local leagues across all of the Home Nations.
Each club hosted two events and at the opening event at a blisteringly hot Collingtree Park in June it was the home club who came out the blocks fast and took an early lead in the league with Zac Davidson and Isaac Rowe the leading scorers on the day.
In the second event it was again Collingtree who set the pace with two Collingtree pairs - Zac and partner Charlie Lynch, Isaac and Leo Watson - sharing the best score of the day.
In the third event Peterborough Milton achieved their best result of the season so far, tying with Collingtree Park and this time Gabriella Grant and Cadence Edwards from Peterborough were in joint first position.
In each of the second events at each venue, Collingtree's youngsters continued to deliver very good scores and stretch their lead at top the table but it was very pleasing to see that as each event progressed everybody was improving from all three clubs.
In the final event at Peterborough Milton in September everybody was delighted to see Overstone Park achieve their best position and best score of the season with Eloise McIntyre and Echo Linnell producing the team's best score of the season.
Collingtree Park ended the season as the deserving table topping Gold Medal winners, with Peterborough Milton taking the Silver Medals and Overstone Park taking the Bronze Medals. I have no doubt players from all three teams will soon be featuring high on the leaderboards in our County Junior events and just like some of our previous GolfSixes players they will go on to represent the County in the future.
A very big thank you to all three clubs and their greenkeeping and catering teams for hosting enjoyable events, also to all the volunteers at each event and particularly to Adrian (and Mark) at Collingtee and Hazel at Overstone for all their hard work managing their teams.
The feedback from parents has been very positive and as you will see from the medal presentation photo, the players had a great time and we are already looking forward to running a (hopefully expanded) Northamptonshire GolfSixes League in 2024.
