Shivani Karthikeyan finishes 2nd in the English Amateur Championships

Superb performance of golf by Shivani Karthikeyan (Peterborough Milton) to finish 2nd in the English Amateur Championships at Seaton Carew.

Playing 18 holes of stroke-play on each of the first two days, with one round on each of Seaton Carew courses Shivani finished in 4th place with (72/69) 141 progressing to the final 32 into the match play rounds.

Five birdies saw Shivani storm to a 6&4 win through to the last 16.  The women's last 16 saw five of the eight matches go to a play-off, showing the competitiveness of the field, with Shivani was two down after the first two holes but battled back to lead after 13, despite being behind again on 17 she won with pars on the 18th and on the 1st play-off hole to send her through the last eight.

In a closely fought match Shivani progressed to the semis with a 2&1 win.  Starting the semis off with a 2up lead through two with her opponent making mistakes off the tee.  Clawing one back on the 6th Shivani restored her two-hole advantage the very next hole, and saved par with a short putt to halve the 8th.  A birdie on the 9th got her opponent the Helen Holm Scottish Women's Open champion back into the match but making bogeys on 11 & 12 to put Shivani into a commanding 3up lead, keeping her nerve, and Shivani sticking her approach close on the 16th closed out with a convincing 4&2 win.

The final 36 holes saw the lead change hands six times in a fantastic battle. Neither player got more than two holes ahead throughout, and in a dramatic finish, Shivani holed 25-foot putts on the 34th and 35th holes, before a small mistake on the final 36th hole giving her opponent a 2up victory and narrowly missing out on the win.

Congratulations Shivani on a tremendous performance.
