EGU Gold Medal Winner

Harry Woan (Overstone Park GC) joined the roll call of winners when he took top spot at the Fullers London Pride EGU Gold Medal over the Hotchkin course at Woodhall Spa.

The 16 year old from Northamptonshire returned a second round 35 points off a scratch handicap for 73, two ahead of Paul Harman from Yorkshire, with 39 and five clear of the rest of the field.

“This is really good,” said Woan. “It’s special to win a national title and hopefully this will lead to better things for me.”

Woan, who only turned 16 a few weeks ago, is enjoying a successful season. He won the Northamptonshire Boys Championship and finished fifth in the English boys under 16 Championship for the McGregor Trophy earlier this summer. So this is another feather in his cap.

“I didn’t play that well today,” he added. “It was a bit scrappy but I got it round and my putting was quite good.”

He had two birdies along with one blob, his only blemish of the weekend, which came on the par four seventh where he pushed his drive right into rough and pulled his second into further trouble. However, with a three point lead from the first round he wasn’t in any danger.

“I just kept to my plan of hitting fairways and greens and it mostly worked. I thought this week would be tough because everyone else would be getting plenty of shots and the Hotchkin is a tough course. But I have played here quite a bit so I knew it reasonably well.”

Third place went to Christian Cox from Temple with 37 points off 12 for 68 on countback from Tim Ford, off two, from Woolton with 34 while Paul Storey from Enfield was fifth, also on 68, after a second round 33.

Second place Harman, a 33 year old joiner from the Cave Castle Hotel course near Hull, didn’t find a single birdie in his 39 points but he parred every hole from the ninth, coming home with 22 points.

But his wasn’t the best round of the second day. That belonged to Robin Perry from Exeter, who signed for 41 points and a total of 65. The 51 year old from the Exminster club who works in the petroleum industry, was visiting Woodhall Spa for the first time but the 18 handicapper’s tally was a far cry from his opening foray when he had six blobs on his card.
