Staverton Park got the better of Wellingborough by a single point in the Hollingsworth Trophy final at Overstone Park as the players had to battle the cold and wet conditions.
Ryan Evans warmed up for his appearance in the second stage of European Tour Q School by sealing the first point for Wellingborough with Jon Harris as they beat Marcus Weatherburn and Andrew Gibbins on the 15th.
With Wellingborough team-mates Jamie Milligan and Duncan Cornish always in control of the final tie, Staverton knew they had to win the other three ties to clinch the overall match.
That prospect looked almost certain when Rob Hemus and Leigh Foster grabbed a crucial point against Mark Davis and Duncan Felce, before Andy Sant and Bart Pomerleau beat Tim Veal and Roger Butler on 17.
But there was almost one final twist to the match as Wellingborough lefties Glen Gulla and Lawrence Berryman fought back from four down with four holes to play to take their game down the 18th hole.
Opponents Mike Franklin and Russell Brown managed to keep their nerve on the last however as they safely two-putted for par to secure Staverton’s first Hollingsworth victory since 2005, and fourth in total.
