Glory glory Meghan MacLaren

Wellingborough’s Meghan MacLaren had the glory of bagging the winning point in the final day singles for Great Britain & Ireland as they beat USA in the Curtis Cup at Dun Laoghaire GC in Ireland.
The 22-year-old held off a late fightback from USA’s Bethany Wu to secure an individual victory on the penultimate hole as the home side recorded a 11½-8½ success.
MacLaren admitted: “That’s a moment I will always remember. I wasn’t sure what was going on at one point but then it became pretty clear how close it was. I just tried to relax and play my own game.”
The plus-four handicapper emphasised her strength of character as she overcame a disappointing opening day, when she was beaten in both her games, to play a crucial role on the second day.
Competing with home player Maria Dunne in the morning foursomes, MacLaren holed an excellent 10-foot winning putt on the 18th for victory to give GB & Ireland a single point advantage.
Three consecutive birdies on the front nine in the afternoon fourballs sent MacLaren on her way to another win alongside Dunne as the home outfit took all three games.
Needing just two and a half points to secure just their second victory in the bi-annual event in the last 10 meetings, Leona Maguire put the first point on the board, before Olivia Mehaffey grabbed a half.
Although the holders responded with three wins, MacLaren kept her nerve when her three hole lead was cut to just one as she beat Wu with a par five on the long 17th hole.
Fellow county golfer Carol Gibbs, who played in the 1974 Curtis Cup, was one of several Wellingborough club members supporting as MacLaren followed in the footsteps of Charley Hull, who played in the successful GB & Ireland team four years ago.
